Work begins on historic Memorial Hall
A crucial element of the multi-million pound Newbridge Regeneration Programme commences. The £2.1 million project to conserve and repair the Grade II* listed Celynen Collieries Memorial Hall in Newbridge has begun after 10 years hard work by the trustees of the Institute and Memorial Hall and all their supporters.
The historic building, which was once a bustling social venue in the heart of the local community, will now be transformed as part of a major improvement scheme that will see the whole building receive a facelift.
In 1898 a group of local miners formed themselves into a committee to establish an association aimed at improving the social amenities of their fellow workers. The ‘Memo’ was constructed in 1924 as a lasting memorial to local servicemen who lost their lives during World War One. It boasted a ballroom and a cinema and quickly became a key meeting place for the whole community.
The theatre and cinema auditorium is located on the upper floor of the Memorial Hall, and could seat around 700 people. It still possess a magnificent art deco sense of grandeur and an all pervasive ambience that shines through, even in it's current state of disrepair.
Anthony A Davies Construction Ltd of Abergavenny has been appointed as principal contractors for the project. They have considerable experience in the restoration of listed and heritage buildings over their 33 year history.
Anthony Davies, Managing Director said “We are proud to be involved with this prestigious project that will provide a wonderfully restored facility for the local community whilst still maintaining its historical features. We look forward to working with the project team to realise their dreams”.
Cllr Ken James, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development, welcomed the news, “This is a landmark day for the much loved Memo, and we are delighted to be working closely with the trustees to bring about the long-awaited and much anticipated regeneration of the building. As a council, we have already been working with the small group of dedicated volunteers who are driving this scheme forward, and I greatly look forward to seeing this historic venue restored to its former glory”.
Chair of the Memo, Howard Stone said "This is fantastic news, the final step in what has been an eight year marathon. Huge thanks must be given to all those who have kept the belief that what was once a dream will now become a reality. We are also grateful to all our funding supporters and would thank WAG for at long last providing the much needed support to this fantastic project. Our thanks also go to the officers of Caerphilly Borough County Council who have worked tirelessly to achieve this result, and also to our superb project team."
The project was designed by Alwyn Jones Architects and funding includes support from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, Welsh Government’s Targeted Match Fund, CADW, the Communities Facilities and Activities programme, Heritage Lottery Fund, Big Lottery, Trustees of the Institute and Memo and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
